Unlike the eremitic monastics who rarely came together to worship, the believers of the "cenobitis" tradition ("cenibite" being derived, via Latin, from the Greek words for "common" and "life"), lived together and held all of their property in common, uner the rule of an abbot or abbess who directed their spiritual lives.
